DIPLOMA REGULATIONS for  VIDEO PRODUCTION

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Recommended Course Sequence

TVP 101           Techniques of Video Production

3 credits

Students are provided with the knowledge of the technical terms and are taken through the stages of video production. At the end of the course they are expected to produce a five minute movie.

TVP 102           Scriptwriting      

3 credits

This course focuses on the planning, storyboarding, and scripting of video, and nonlinear productions. Narrative scripting techniques are also taught. Scripts are developed With an emphasis on characterization, plotting, writing for specific target audiences, messages and script format.

TVP 103           Videography 1 

3 credits

This course takes the learner through the rudiments of camera operation. Students learn television grammar and practice shooting sequences from a prepared storyboard. Students recognize the principle of visual design for motion pictures, develop their abilities to evaluate the visual potential of locations, interpret the technical requirements of motion picture photography, and operate professional video cameras.
Prerequisite: None

TVP 104           Principles of Lighting 

1.5 credits

The student studies and applies lighting techniques and concepts as they relate to various media applications. Emphasis is placed on mastering the skills required to make appropriate lighting decisions under a variety of field and studio situations. There is also a focus on pre-production skills as well as problem solving on the set.

TVP 105           Introduction to Audio Recording 

1.5 credits

Students study the principles for recording sound. Students examine the tools and techniques used in multi-track recording and mixing. The course includes the basics of critical listening, microphone technique, console and tape machine operation, signal flow, signal processing, patching, and general studio operations.

TVP 106           Video Post Production 1

3 credits

This course introduces students to video editing of visuals and sound using video recorders and players. The techniques of dubbing, assembling and inserting visuals and sound from source to source are practiced.

TVP 201           Field Production

3 credits

Students are immersed in the process of professional video field production in Electronic Field Production and Outside Broadcasts. It examines EFP, single-camera location shooting as expressed in documentaries, corporate projects, or commercials. Edited to completion

TVP 202           Studio Production

3 credits

The study of video production in the studio takes previously learned skills and applies them in a controlled indoor environment. All techniques and visual skills are now developed in an area where it is possible to control the shooting arena. The course focuses on the theoretical as well as technical aspects of news or magazine format television production

TVP 203           Videography 2

3 credits

Students are immersed in the process of professional video field production in Electronic News Gathering (ENG). News encompasses on-the-spot coverage and storytelling in a spur-of-the- moment reporting format.  Students are expected to edit their projects to completion. This includes advanced lighting techniques for ENG.

TVP 204           Television Directing 

3 credits

This course provides an overview of the director in regard to television, video productions. Students learn the role of a director in directing the talent, script, camera, and production crew; they experience production challenges, keeping the production on schedule and on time.  Students direct short movies in class.

TVP 206           Video Post Production 2

3 credits

Students apply previously acquired skills to online analogue editing A/B roll, SMPTE time code, video effects, audio mastering, and character generator capabilities. Aesthetic and technical considerations are practiced through the completion of an editing project. Part two of this course’s aim is to introduce the learner to the principles of Non-Linear Editing and finishing in a simulated post production environment.

DD1A               Digital Design 

3 credits

Students are introduced to the world of design including what goes into producing effective and dynamic images using Adobe Photoshop software.
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Windows OS, or Mac OS. Must be computer literate.

MB 2                The Business of Media Business

3 credits

This course examines the business side of production in the TV, video and related electronic media industries. Emphasis is placed on legal issues such as copyright, permits, contracts, basic marketing skills, sales and budgetary concerns.
